School is in like never before.
“Elizabeth, put that pencil down!” yells Miss Atkins. The tone of her voice adds to the commotion of the class, to the adrenaline of the situation. “Matt! Everyone! Stay away from her! Elizabeth, I said put that pencil down!” Elizabeth wants to comply but can’t. Matthew wants to kill her. Everyone in the classroom has retreated to the walls, even before Miss Atkins’ warnings. Some have scampered to the front of the classroom, threatening to leave. But Matthew doesn’t budge from his cat-like stance. He’s prepared to lunge at Elizabeth as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Miss Atkins doesn’t know what else to do. Of course, approaching Elizabeth is the furthest thought in her mind, but she isn’t sure if code allows her to follow her instinct—flee to safety—so she simply stands in place, watching, paralyzed by her inability to make a decision. |

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Edward M. Baldwin is a former high school English teacher and literacy coordinator who now seeks to make a difference with his writing. A graduate of the University of North Florida, he started Learnt, the first novel of his “Duval County books,” during his junior year at UNF. It took three years to complete. However, he wrote Victims of Shakespeare (his second Duval County novel) in half that time, quickly followed by Teacher Deficit Disorder. He’s currently writing Gun Point Average, his fourth Duval County novel.
Having an arsenal of “classroom dramas” to complete, he aspires to become the John Grisham of education—America’s Education Novelist. He lives in Jacksonville with his wife and three children. |
